ADA Anniversary

33 years ago on July 26th, 1990

The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) was signed into law and that helps protect people with disabilities from being discriminated.

Although we’ve had some triumphs, there’s still more work to be done. One of the issues that I’m the most passionate about and I want to see happen is to eliminate the marriage penalty and people with disabilities can finally have marriage equality to where we don’t have to choose between marrying the person we love and worrying about losing our much-needed benefits.

Currently if you have SSI or SSDI and if you get married, you risk losing half or even all of your benefits. That’s just so unfair and not okay because we deserve to be able to marry the person we love and keep our benefits, also we already have enough challenges and struggles to survive in society to worry about. People with disabilities deserve to have a seat at the policy decision making table and have their voices heard, we’re tired of being excluded along with tired of being ignored and being left behind in society because we’re human just like you.

With an election coming next year, we can’t afford to be on the sidelines because there’s too much at stake including our rights and democracy. Get out and vote like it’s do or die because we can’t lose our rights and most of all, we can’t lose our democracy and inclusion for all.
